From Tommie's Desk

Well it's happened again.  I find myself being drawn away from the main thing, the kingdom, to those matters of much less import - which would be everything else.   In this case, it is a familiar place of distraction and it happens every four years, yes, it is the political arena.  A fascinating and compelling arena, but one which pales in significance to the kingdom of God.   There is no question that these are trying times and the stakes  have never been higher in terms of those issues that we face as a nation.  The next president will appoint between 2-5 supreme court justices, depending on how many terms he serves and these judges will greatly impact the culture of our country for many years to come.   I could go on about national security and many other matters all of which are insignificant compared to the defining issue of our time, the issue of life and the tragedy of 50 million babies, in America, lost to abortion since the decision of Roe vs Wade in 1973.  It is indeed every man's issue. . . or it should be.

And yet, for Christians, there is a higher call.  It is the call of the kingdom.  From the time that Jesus declared, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand," a new reality was set in motion, the kingdom of heaven, the reality of heaven, come to earth.   The value of this kingdom is inestimable.  Jesus  said it is "like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it" (Mat. 16:45-46).  It is a supernatural kingdom, not bound or limited by earthly laws or resources or human understanding.  It is unshakable.  And it is for here and now.   For too many Christians, the kingdom of God is a phrase in the bible, a part of Christian theology but not a present reality in their everyday lives.   We are called to seek first the kingdom of Heaven, in other words the pursuit of the kingdom of God, is to be our primary pursuit in life, not a side line or a part of our lives.  Let us be faithful stewards of, "the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven," (Mark 4:11), not to become more religious, but to demonstrate the reality of Jesus and his complete salvation provision to our generation and the generations to come.

So, while the political pundits engage in their work, we will seek to understand the issues and participate in the political process.  At the same time it is up to us, the sons and daughters of God, to display the Kingdom of God, and demonstrate the supreme power of this kingdom, for this is the high calling of every believer.  "And I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom of heaven . . ." (Mat.  16:19).   With privilege comes responsibility, the keys are given to us that we might unlock the realm of heaven here in the earth, ie; on earth as it is in heaven, sound familiar?
