And I, brethren could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2) I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able 3) for you are still carnal . . . 1 Cor 3:1-3a
Salvation occurs when we are miraculously and wonderfully born into the family of God. We are spiritual babes, through the grace of God which he freely gives to all who would receive. Salvation is the entrance into a supernatural life with new realities and possibilities. Our past is under the blood of Jesus, our sins are forgiven and the third person of the Trinity takes up residence on the inside of us! Wow! God, as a loving Father is patient and loving with us as we begin to take our first steps as a child of God. As it is in the natural, so it is in the supernatural; though we are at first babes, we are called to maturity, moreover we are called to discipleship. The great commission given by Jesus was, "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations . . . teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." Disciples are students, they are maturing, progressing, growing in all things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. Paul writing to the brethren at Corinth rebuked them for being spiritual babes, even after a period of time that he considered adequate for their maturity to have taken place.
If our sole purpose as sons of God were just to eat spiritual goldfish crackers then maybe it would not be such an issue but we are in fact called into the family business of discipling nations! Hmmm. Everyone knows that babies or toddlers are not able to participate in the serious family discussions, or have a role in decision making beyond which juice box they prefer. They are mostly concerned about their personal comfort and needs. They are babies and everyone understands. Unfortunately, there are those in the body of Christ who seemingly have refused to grow up. They cannot receive any scriptural teaching that makes them uncomfortable. Why do certain truths presented in the bible, prove so difficult to digest? The answer, I believe is that they have never received and appropriated the healing and freedom that is offered by Jesus through His redemptive work.
Often, these individuals have felt hurt by someone in their past, a pastor or some spiritual leader who they felt was too harsh, or judgmental or any number of things that caused them discomfort or pain. As a result of this, anyone who preaches or teaches anything beyond John 3:16, is perceived as being lacking love. In reality, they have allowed their past pain to keep them from the fullness of the truth as revealed in the Word of God, and as expressed by THE WORD Himself.
We cannot and must not make the dysfunction of our past the paradigm for our present and future. If we give our past more authority than His perfect plan, revelation (the Bible), and will, than we have made the work of Jesus of none effect. We must be healed. We must accept that the past was dysfunctional, even abusive and wrong, and then let it go. It is under the blood. It is gone. Make a decision like Paul made, "forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forward to those thing which are ahead," to live from the finished work of Christ. It was for freedom you were set free!
